Black pig offering ritual – beautiful customs in Tan Phuong village

(BGO) – Keeping the traditional customs, annually on lunar February 11 – 12, people in Tan Phuong village or old Phung Phap village in Tan My commune, Bac Giang city (Bac Giang province excitedly organize the village festival to conduct black pig (Ong Lang) procession and offering ritual. It is an opportunity for all villagers near and far to gather, offer incense and commemorate the great contributors to the village and country.

As the legend, Phung Phap temple worshiped saint Hoang Pho Lang who was a mandarin under Le dynasty and first scholar born in the village with outstanding talent and achievement. He always paid due attention to exploiting the land, caring for the crop to support local people. To commemorate his great contribution, the villagers built the temple to worship him. Long time ago, the pork was rare in difficult era and meat of black pig was much more precious. So local people selected to offer black pig or Ong Lang to the saint every year. Ong Lang must be bathed with ginger and wine water for weeks before the procession. In the photo: A procession group conducts the ritual.
