Vocational training is key to poverty reduction in mountainous areas
BAC GIANG - The support policy for vocational training gradually affirms its important meaning to sustainably reduce and eliminate the poverty in the mountainous district of Son Dong in Bac Giang province. Also, it helps many rural workers gain knowledge, stable jobs and income.
More than 10 years ago, the family of Hoang Van Quyet, a Nung ethnic was one of the poorest households in Trai Rang village of Cam Dan commune. Since 2019, he and his wife have participated in training courses on fruit tree planting and beekeeping. Then the couples borrowed 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank with preferential interest rates to invest in production development.

Initially, Quyet bought 10 bee colonies, placed them under the lychee canopy and planted more than 2 hectares of forest land. Thanks to his techniques, the bee colonies have now grown to nearly 30 colonies which give him about 200 liters of honey to supply to the market each year with annual earning of more than 30 million VND.
In addition, he takes on additional work to take care of acacia and eucalyptus gardens for forest owners living far away. After the course, his wife was recruited to work at a garment factory in town.
According to Trieu Ngoc Nam, Deputy Head of the district Division of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the district encountered many difficulties in implementing social security policies in general and vocational training in particular because of large proportion of ethnic minority people.
To achieve the goal of ensuring social security and sustainable poverty reduction, every year from the National Target Programs, the Division coordinates with sectors and localities to advise the District People's Committee to organize vocational training classes, support trees and seedlings for poor households, near-poor households, newly escaped poverty families and ethnic minorities in difficult circumstances.
At the same time, the Division continues to support people with enough conditions to build production models after vocational training with preferential capital, training programs, intensive farming technology transfer...
In the 2021-2023 period, more than 81% of workers who graduated from primary and vocational training under 3 months were employed. By the end of 2023, the locality exceeded the plan to implement the poverty reduction target of the year with 17/17 communes and towns completing the plan...

This year, Son Dong district strives to provide vocational training for about 700 rural workers, raising the rate of trained workers by the end of the year to more than 75%.
To achieve the set goal, the district Division of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has coordinated with training institutions to open vocational training classes according to people's needs.
Such classes continue to be launched in villages, hamlets and residential groups as well as practiced right in the fields, fish ponds and livestock for easy application in actual production.
At the same time, through the form of organizing direct job fairs, the district connects with many businesses that use human resources or provide labor export human resources, create more opportunities for vocational training, improve knowledge, skills and offer more job and income for workers.
