2019 National ‘Cheo’ Festival in Bac Giang entertains public with 26 special plays

(BGO) - On the evening of September 14, the 2019 National ‘Cheo’ Festival took place at the province’s Conference Center. The event is hosted by the Department of Performing Arts (the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Stage Artists and the Bac Giang provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong emphasized that through centuries of development with ups and downs, the ‘cheo’ stage still shows a certain role and position in the life of art, production and cultural activities of the people in the Red River Delta region.

The 2019 National ‘Cheo’ Festival aims to contribute to honouring the values of the ‘cheo’ art. This is also an opportunity for the ‘cheo’ art units, artists, actors and actresses to exchange, learn, discover, explore and renew themselves in the artistic labor as well as find solutions and operational methods that are suitable to the situation to have more high quality works, thus practically serving the people.

On behalf of the provincial leaders, Le Anh Duong, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee, said that with specific and practical actions and deeds, the traditional ‘cheo’ art associated with village festivals and community cultural activities has been more and more vital, pervasive and lasting in the villages of Bac Giang, becoming a widespread mass singing movement.

The hosting of this National ‘Cheo’ Festival is an honor of Bac Giang province, affirming the province’s achievements in preserving and promoting the traditional ‘cheo’ art, which have been recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

It is an opportunity for ‘cheo’ artisans, artists, actors and actresses to meet, exchange and learn each other’s experience, contributing to promoting the development of the ‘cheo’ art. At the same time, it offers a chance for the people of all strata to enjoy special art programmes and plays of theaters and professional ‘cheo’ art troupes throughout the country.

A scene in the play “Goi do” make good impressions on the audience.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, the artists of the host unit – the Bac Giang ‘Cheo’ Theater performed the first play of the festival - "Goi do" (Calling the boat).

According to the schedule, the art troupes will perform in the mornings and evenings from September 14 to 27, with 26 well-prepared special ‘cheo’ plays with high educational content and themes, and ensured artistic quality.

The closing ceremony of the festival will be held on the evening of September 28. The military art troupe and those of Vinh Phuc, Thai Binh, Ha Nam and Hung Yen provinces will have five performances to serve the public in the districts of Hiep Hoa, Yen Dung, Lang Giang, Viet Yen and Tan Yen.

At the closing ceremony, the Organizing Committee will present gold and silver medals to high-quality works and excellent artists as well as awards to outstanding authors, directors, musicians and painters.

Promoting role of grassroots artists in preserving cheo art
(BGO) - Mentioning Bac Giang, people have long remembered the reputation of the ancient Chieng Bac cheo (Vietnamese traditional opera). Social development is putting this traditional art in danger of being lost. In this context, many grassroots singers have made efforts to find ways to preserve and promote the value of the cheo art.
Cheo singing echoes in rural villages
(BGO) - Cheo (Vietnamese traditional opera) singing is a traditional art activity which has been present in Yen Dung land of Bac Giang province from ancient times. Over the past years, the district has paid due attention to preserving and promoting this type of art, thereby contributing to improving the cultural and spiritual lives for the people.

(BGO) – The Center of Culture and Cinema in the northern province of Bac Giang cooperated with the Center of Culture and Information in Tan Yen district on May 8 kicked off the course to teach Cheo (traditional opera) and Quan ho (Love duet) singing to more than 70 art talents in Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district).
