Updated: 22:32, 01/01/2024
BAC GIANG - The family of Nguyen Thi Nap (born 1947) in Huu Nghi village, Ninh Son commune, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province has four generations who are passionate about singing Quan ho (love duet folk song) and contribute to preserving and promoting the unique folk songs on the north bank of the Cau river.

Her family has four generations performing Quan Ho including: Nap's mother (Nguyen Thi Toan), Nap’s 3 daughters (Nguyen Thi Hang, Nguyen Thi Uyen, Nguyen Thi Tu) and grandchild Nguyen Anh Tuan (Nguyen Thi Hang’s son). When she was young, Nguyen Thi Toan (Nap's mother) was famous for singing quan ho very well.

Born and grew up in Huu Nghi village - one of the 5 ancient quan ho villages of Viet Yen district, Nap has loved Quan ho melodies since childhood. When she was a teenager, she and friends shared the singing moment together every time she finished working in the fields.

She also spent time finding artisans in the area to collect and learn skills in performing this art form. Just like that, her love for Quan Ho folk songs grew bigger. She became one of the artistic nucleus of the village. For years on the village festival, Nap and other male and female singers have sang the love songs.

In 2023, she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State. Artist Nguyen Thi Nap shared: "Gathering many members is difficult, how to make everyone, children and grandchildren in the family understand and enjoy singing Quan Ho, is even more difficult, especially Quan Ho with ancient lyrics, singing without accompaniment music”.

Not only teaching her children and grandchildren, artisan Nguyen Thi Nap has gathered and taught Quan Ho singing to many people in the village, commune and local students, promoting cultural and artistic movements.

In many performances, festivals and singing performances organized by the district, commune and clubs, artisan Nguyen Thi Nap and her descendants actively participated and won many awards.
