9 Vietnamese universities recognized in World University Rankings by subject

Updated: 16:27, 26/01/2025

Nine Vietnamese universities have broken into the 2025 World University Rankings by subject by the Times Higher Education (THE) in eight subject areas, an increase of three schools compared to last year.

Vietnamese universities appeared in eight out of 11 categories, including Business and Economics, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medicine and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences, according to the ranking released earlier this week by the British magazine THE.

Students of Duy Tan University.

Three new representatives joined the list this year are Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Hanoi Medical University, and Ho Chi Minh City Open University. Overall, most of the universities are ranked between 301 and 1,000, showing little change compared to last year.

The highest-ranking positions, in the 301-400 range, are held by Business and Economics, Engineering, and Physical Sciences.

Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University rank the highest. Both universities were placed in the 301-400 range for Engineering and Physical Sciences, and in 401-500 for Life Sciences.

In the fields of Medicine and Health, as well as Social Sciences, Duy Tan University ranks in the 401-500 range, while Ton Duc Thang University shares the same range for Computer Science.

In Business and Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics secured a spot in the 301-400 range. Vietnam National University, Hanoi, remains the sole representative in the Education Studies category, ranked 401-500, maintaining its position from last year.

The remaining Vietnamese schools in the ranking are Vietnam National University, HCMC, Hue University, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

THE is one of the three largest global university ranking organizations, alongside QS and Shanghai Ranking.

It evaluates universities based on five groups of criteria: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry Engagement, and International Outlook. Each category carries a weighting of 4-30%, with Research Environment holding the highest weight.

The THE 2025 World University Rankings by Subject, evaluates universities globally based on their performance across 11 academic subject areas, which are Business and Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Medicine and Health, and Education, among others.

This emphasis on research explains why Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University outperform other Vietnamese institutions. According to the Ministry of Education and Training in 2022, both universities have implemented policies to boost scientific research, allocating 10-20% of their revenue to this area.

In addition to faculty research, they collaborate with scientists both domestically and internationally, contributing to an increase in international publications and citation metrics.

U.S. universities dominate the 2025 rankings. Stanford University leads in Education, Law, and Psychology; Harvard University tops the rankings for Engineering and Life Sciences; and the California Institute of Technology ranks first in Physical Sciences.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads in three categories: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences, reflecting its legacy in STEM fields.

In the U.K., the University of Oxford leads in Computer Science and Medicine and Health.

In Asia, China and Singapore each have universities in the top 50 across all subject areas. Hong Kong universities are ranked in nine categories, while Japanese universities are present in eight.

The strongest performances by Asian universities are in Business and Economics, with Peking University and Tsinghua University in China ranked 4th and 6th globally. The National University of Singapore ranks 9th in Engineering and is among the top 10 in Physical Sciences.
