Ceremony marks 10th anniversary of UNESCO recognition of Nghe Tinh Vi-Giam folk singing

Updated: 13:56, 25/11/2024

A ceremony was held in Vinh City, in the central province of Nghe An, on November 23, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Nghe Tinh Vi-Giam folk singing’s recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (November 27, 2014–2024).

On November 27, 2014, the people of Nghe An Province and Ha Tinh Province proudly celebrated UNESCO’s official adoption of a resolution recognising Vi-Giam folk singing as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Over the past 10 years, Vi-Giam has been demonstrated their vitality and profound influence across time and space. Significant progress has been made in teaching the heritage within communities, encouraging and supporting artisans in practicing and passing it down, and expanding the network of clubs dedicated to the art form.

Highly appreciating the great efforts made by local authorities and people, and congratulating the achievements attained in recent years, Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, emphasised that the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage values is essential to safeguarding the soul and identity of the nation.

Protecting and enhancing the values of UNESCO-recognised heritage is not only an honour and pride but also a responsibility and commitment — not just for Nghe An Province and Ha Tinh Province but for the entire nation — in fulfilling the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, he added.

The deputy minister urged the Nghe An authorities to proactively and effectively coordinate with Ha Tinh Province, central ministries and agencies, local governments, relevant organisations, heritage-bearing communities, and the broader Vietnamese public.

Following the commemorative ceremony was the artistic programme highlighting the intellect, spirit, and character of the people of Nghe An Province and Ha Tinh Province through the cultural heritage of Vi-Giam folk singing.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of UNESCO recognition to Vi-Giam folk signing, a series of special events will take place in Nghe An Province and Ha Tinh Province from November 22 to 30, including a traditional folk arts festival themed “Vietnam — The Colours of Heritage”, the awards ceremony for the Vi-Giam folk song lyric composition contest, an exhibition of light sculpture art, an exhibition of “Vietnamese Ao Dai”, and various artistic exchange programmes.
