Complex of Tien Luc communal house, temple and pagoda recognized as special national relic

BAC GIANG - On November 26, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long signed Decision No. 1473/QD-TTg to rank 6 relics as special national relics (phase 16), including the architectural and artistic relic of the Tien Luc communal house, temple and pagoda complex in Lang Giang district (Bac Giang).

The relic complex of Tien Luc communal house, temple and pagoda includes architectural works of art: Phuc Quang Pagoda, Tien Luc Temple, Thuan Hoa Communal House, Vien Son Communal House and Da Huong tree. This place is the center of cultural, religious and spiritual activities of the people of Tien Luc region.

In addition to the Buddhist imprint present at Phuc Quang Pagoda, the relic complex of communal house, temple and Tien Luc Pagoda is also a place to worship the tutelary gods who contributed to protecting the peace of the homeland and country.

Based on historical sources and Han-Nom documents, the works in the relic complex were built long time ago, restored and embellished during the Le Trung Hung period (17th-18th century).

This is a famous ancient temple in the region, not only for historical, cultural and scientific values ​​but also outstanding architectural and artistic values.

Currently, the works are still relatively intact in terms of architecture, shape and decorative carvings on architectural components with many unique, sophisticated and rich themes, with high artistic value such as: Dragon nest, big dragon, animal shape, fairy riding dragon and wrestling scene among others.

Here is the home to Camphor tree which was granted the title “Quoc Chua Do Moc Da Dai Vuong” by King Le Canh Hung, meaning the biggest and most beautiful Camphor tree in the country. The thousand-year-old tree is rare in the world as a sacred symbol in the Vietnamese cultural space.

The relic complex still preserves many traditional cultural values, including the Tien Luc festival. Previously, the event took place on the 8th and 9th day of the first lunar month every year, but now it is held on the 18th, 19th and 20th of the third lunar month.

The festival is preserved almost intact by the local people with various rituals such as procession, sacrifice, festival space and folk games. The highlights feature the water procession, palanquin procession, word arrangement, and unique bridge-capturing game that demonstrate the intelligence and ingenuity of the people and their wishes for a peaceful, prosperous and happy life.

The festival was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The relics also have a system of ancient Buddha statues and many valuable relics and antiques. Not only during festivals, the relic complex often attracts many scientists and tourists to visit, worship and research.

In 2020, the People's Committee of Bac Giang province issued a decision to recognize the tourist destination - the relic complex of Camphor tree, communal house, temple and pagoda of Tien Luc commune.
