Fragrant fruit land of Luc Ngan
Bac Giang has 4 mountainous districts and Luc Ngan is the largest district with an area of more than 1,032 km2 and a population of over 230,000 people.
Due to complicated mountainous terrain, difficult transportation, little land for rice cultivation, lack of irrigation water and backward farming skills, so for many years, Luc Ngan has been a poor district with food only reaching around 100 kg per person per year.

To widespread the hill garden economic development movement to even difficult areas, for many years, the district mobilized budget and called on officials and people in lowland communes to support highland ones with tens of thousands of lychee seedlings.
By the end of 1995, the district allocated 14,262 hectares of vacant land and bare hills. Some rice growing areas at high altitudes with unstable productivity were converted to grow fruit trees with high economic value.
In addition to familiar local fruit trees such as lychee, custard apple, lemon, longan, canarium... the district invested, selected and piloted to plant other valuable fruit trees such as Australian lychee, Nhan hau persimmon, Hung Yen longan, oranges and grapefruits among others so as to enrich the fruit trees for the area.
The innovation really brought vitality to the country's economy. When the village fruit trees became goods and affirmed their value in the marketplace, lychees contributed significantly to helping Luc Ngan farmers escape from the poverty.
By 2023, the total lychee area in the district hit 17,300 hectares with output reaching more than 128,000 tonnes of fruits. The area of lychee grown in line with VietGAP procedure reached more than 13,300 hectares, accounting for 77 percent of the total area.
According to the People's Committee of Luc Ngan district, the total production value reached 3,224 billion VND (137 million USD), of which domestic consumption was 890 billion VND and export was 2,434 billion VND.
The area attracted about 230,000 tourist arrivals on ripe lychee season. 2023 was also the year lychee production made great progress in product quality.
The rigorous evaluation, inspection and quarantine proved that all samples of Luc Ngan lychee achieve high safety indexes and meet export standards to international markets.
In fact, over the past years, the harvest results from the same unit of area affirmed 6-8 times higher value of fruit trees than the income from growing food crops.
In many villages and communes, the income structure from fruit trees reached over 60 percent of the total income from farming. Many households earned 80 – 90 percent of total income from forest hills and fruit gardens which helped many local households escape from the poverty and get rich.

The reality in Luc Ngan confirmed that the economic development of forest hills and orchards in the economic restructuring issue is the right direction. "The Party's guidance really suits the people’ will".
The district’s goal of developing and forming a fruit tree group with high economic value and staple lychee came true.
Luc Ngan lychee products are already present in supermarkets in many countries around the world and it will go farther.
In the coming years, the hill garden economy in Luc Ngan will continue proving its effectiveness and contributing to the rapid and strong development of Bac Giang's economy along with the innovation, integration and development of the country.
