Vietnam’s internet speeds rank among top 40 globally
Internet speeds in Vietnam have improved since the rollout of 5G and are now ranked in the global top 40 for both mobile and fixed connections.
According to data released by Ookla Speedtest, mobile internet download speeds in Vietnam reached 86.96 Mbps in December, the highest ever recorded and 60% higher than in September.

This boost moved Vietnam up seven positions to 37th place in the global rankings. Meanwhile, fixed broadband speed was at 159.32 Mbps, ranking 35th globally.
This marks the first time both mobile and fixed internet speeds have broken into the top 40.
But a significant gap remains between mobile internet download and upload speeds. The average upload speed for both mobile and fixed networks stood at around 25 Mbps.
Vietnamese telecom providers began commercializing their 5G networks in the last three months of 2024, contributing to the steady increase in mobile internet speeds.
In mid-December, Viettel, a leading mobile provider, said that approximately 4 million of its subscribers, or 70% of those in areas where 5G is available, had used the network.
Many users reported seeing speeds of 1.5-1.9 Gbps, as measured by the Ookla Speedtest, more than 10 times faster than the 4G network.
According to the Digital Infrastructure Strategy approved by the government last October, Vietnam aims to have 5G services available in 100% of provinces, cities, high-tech zones, IT hubs, research and development centers, innovation hubs, industrial zones, and international airports/ports by 2025.
By 2030, the country expects 5G mobile broadband networks to cover 99% of the population.
Across all markets tracked by Ookla, the UAE leads with a mobile speed of 453.87 Mbps, while Singapore holds the top spot for fixed broadband with a speed of 330.98 Mbps.
