Vietnamese player hits world's 5th fastest serve in women's volleyball

Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen spiked the ball at 107 km/h in their game against Belgium at the 2024 FIVB Women's Volleyball Challenger Cup on Sunday, marking one of the five fastest serves in women's volleyball history.

Tuyen made the impressive serve during the first set of the game, where Vietnam defeated Belgium, a much stronger opponent, to win the bronze medal.

According to the Olympics' website, the fastest volleyball serves among women before Tuyen's were Italian Paola Egonu's 112.7 km/h, Serbian Tijana Boskovic's 110.3 km/h, Canadian Kiera Van Ryk's 108.1 km/h, Boskovic's 107.5 km/h, and Brazilian Tandara Caixeta's 106.9 km/h.

During the game against Belgium, Tuyen made another serve at the speed of 106 km/h.

Tuyen, born in 2000 in the southern province of Vinh Long, weighs 75 kg and stands 1.88 meters tall.

Earlier, she helped Vietnam defend their championship at the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup for Women 2024 after defeating Kazakhstan in the final match on May 29.

She scored the most points for Vietnam at the FIVB tournament, with a total of 77.

The FIVB tournament was held from July 4-7 and featured teams from Argentina, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Kenya, the Philippines (hosts), Puerto Rico, Sweden, and Vietnam.

The Czech Republic won the tournament by beating Puerto Rico in the final.

Winning the bronze medal is Vietnam's biggest success at an FIVB event.
