Updated: 11:20, 28/08/2024

Vietnamese students earned two silver and three bronze medals at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 17 to 27.

This was announced by Hanoi City Department of Education and Training on August 27.

The two silver medallists were Nguyen Ba Linh and Nguyen Xuan Hoang, while bronze medals were won by Nguyen Thi Thu Minh, Luu Quang Minh, and Dam Ngoc Bao Lam. All of them are students of the Hanoi – Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.

Nguyen Ba Linh and Nguyen Xuan Hoang (first and second from left) were named silver medallists of the 2024 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics.

This is the first time all the Vietnamese team members to the IOAA have brought home medals.

The highest achievement of the Vietnamese students at the event was made in 2019 when they bagged one gold and three silver medals.

IOAA is one of the twelve International Science Olympiads. The competition aims to foster interest in astronomy and astrophysics among young people from participating countries, as well as to strengthen ties between different nations and promote the exchange of scientific and cultural knowledge and experiences.

This year’s event attracted the participation of nearly 300 students from 50 countries around the world, who competed in three exams on theory, observation, and data analysis.
