Bac Giang concentrates on crop restructuring to build sustainable large-scale commodity production areas

Updated: 15:03, 21/04/2024

BAC GIANG- Farmers in northern province of Bac Giang have proactively restructured the crop production on one unit of cultivated land area to build concentrated production areas yielding high economic efficiency. This year, the provincial agricultural department has guided the localities to select proper transition models conforming to the development plan.

Nguyen Thi Binh’s family in Dong Bay village, An Lac commune, Son Dong district has cooperated with businesses to cultivate potato for processing for 8 years.

Farmers in Phuc Hoa commune, Tan Yen district are harvesting guava.

Thanks to the guidance by local officials, she has implemented crop rotation under the format “2 rice cultivations combined with 1 vegetable crop” on a nearly 2,000- square metre field instead of only 1 rice harvest before. Her family harvested more than 5 tonnes of commercial potato in March.

Seeing high economic efficiency after crop restructuring, An Lac commune expanded the potato cultivation area to 71 hectares this year, an increase of 13 hectares against last year.

Accordingly, businesses have engaged in the whole production process from seedling supply, science and technology transfer to purchasing products after harvest. 9 out of 10 villages have actively restructured crop production gaining a dramatic increase in the value of agricultural land.

Apart from potato cultivation in An Lac commune, many large-scale production areas have been established in the province. These production areas are not only convenient for cultivation and generate more income for growers but they also yield unique products of each locality, typically the water dropwort growing area in Hoang Luong commune, Hiep Hoa district earning more than 250 million VND (9,830 USD) per hectare each year, guava growing area in Phuc Hoa commune, Tan Yen district gaining more than 800 million USD (31,480 USD) per hectare per year and jujube cultivation area in Phi Dien commune, Luc Ngan district earning more than 500 million VND (19,662 USD) per hectare each year.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the crop restructuring from rice cultivation into annual crops (like potato, corn and varieties of vegetables), perennial plants (such as jujube, guava, jack fruit and custard apple) and aquaculture helps to increase the production value from 3 to 10 times compared to rice cultivation.

However, crop restructuring needs to adhere to the regulations, conform to the agricultural development plan and suit the local cultivation, climate and soil conditions. Besides, it requires close linkage with businesses in production to create a close process with high stability and efficiency.

In the provincial master plan in the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050, Bac Giang province will have 45,000 hectares of land for rice cultivation. Currently, the province has about 70,000 hectares of rice growing land. Thus, there is large room for crop restructuring on the land for rice cultivation,

The province plans to change 6,100 hectares of rice cultivation land into land for annual and perennial plants and aquaculture in the 2021-2025 period while it will restructure 671.9 hectares in 2024 mainly in the districts of Luc Ngan, Yen The and Hiep Hoa.
