Carpenter’s drivable wooden supercars rack up 50 billion social media views

Updated: 17:03, 22/06/2025

A carpenter from Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, has taken the internet by storm with his handcrafted wooden supercars, drawing an astonishing 50 billion views across YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok.

Truong Van Dao began sharing videos of himself building the wooden vehicles as gifts for his children, Dan Tri reported. His YouTube clips, typically 15-20 minutes long, are designed to keep viewers engaged and appeal to DIY (do-it-yourself) enthusiasts worldwide.

The idea came to Dao in 2019 during a park outing with his kids. Inspired by their love of electric toy cars, he began creating wooden versions and documenting the process online, according to Bac Ninh newspaper.

Each car cost around VND300 million (US$11,500) for the wood alone, depending on the type used. Dao also repurposed electric motors salvaged from old vehicles to make them drivable.

His videos quickly went viral, prompting him to develop his own brand, NDWoodArt, which he uploaded on various platforms.

His content became so popular that in late 2023 his wooden replica of the Audi Skysphere Concept car drew the attention of the company itself.

The German carmaker invited him and his family to its headquarters and meet the original designer behind the model.

In a 2024 interview with Tuoi Tre, Dao said he planned to design his own original wooden car model and might one day exhibit or auction his creations for charity.
