China – Vietnam container cargo transport increases by 1,565% in first six months
Container cargo trains have become the main mode of transportation boosting trade between Vietnam and China. A total of 4,928 containers were transported in the first six months of 2024 , marking a 1,565% increase compared to the same period last year.
Chinese media reported that according to statistics from the Nanning Railway Bureau of Guangxi, China, in the first six months of 2024, China-Vietnam container cargo trains departing from Guangxi transported 4,928 containers, a year-on-year increase of 1,565%, accounting for 74% of the containers from China to Vietnam.
In the first six months of this year, China-Vietnam container cargo trains departing from Guangxi mainly transported construction materials, chemicals, and electronic products, with the transport volumes of raw paper, engines, and dried food increasing by a respective 80%, 270%, and 319% compared to the same period last year.
To improve the efficiency of China-Vietnam container cargo trains, the Nanning Railway Bureau has regularly shared related information with Vietnamese railway units to promptly notify relevant agencies and shippers to quickly complete import procedures, thus reducing time requirements and enhancing customs clearance efficiency.
This has ensured the 14-hour travel time from Nanning Station of China to Yen Vien Station of Vietnam, meeting the needs for dispatch, customs clearance, and cargo delivery on the same day.
At the beginning of 2024, the Nanning Railway Bureau expanded the gathering-transportation routes, utilised the role of the Nanning International Railway Port as a cargo transportation hub, and formulated suitable logistics plans for each enterprise to attract cargo to gather at the port for exports to Vietnam.
It has also gradually shifted from single transport services to comprehensive cross-border transport services and extended the free container storage time to 48 hours to reduce transportation costs for businesses.
Currently, more than 20 cities within and outside the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have become cargo gathering points for trains exporting goods to ASEAN countries such as Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The Nanning International Railway Port has initially become a gathering-distribution-transport centre for Chinese goods exported to Vietnam by rail.
