Film adaptation of ‘The Tale Of Kieu’ to be screened at US festival

Updated: 11:32, 19/10/2021
‘Kieu,’ a movie based on Nguyen Du's epic poem Truyen Kieu (The Tale Of Kieu), will be screened at this year's Newport Beach Film Festival in the U.S.

It will be shown on Oct. 27 and its cast will appear on the red carpet before the premiere and interact with the audience after the event.

The 90-minute movie focuses on certain aspects like the love triangle between the three main characters, Kieu (played by My Duyen), Thuc Sinh (Le Anh Duy) and Hoan Thu (Cao Thai Ha).

It tells the story of Kieu, a talented young woman who is forced to prostitute herself to save her father.

Thuc Sinh falls in love with her talent and plans to elope with her to the mountains.

At home, after Hoan Thu hears that her husband has a mistress, quickly investigates and plans to take revenge on Kieu.

Thien Pham, director of 3388 Films, the U.S.-based distribution company that will take the movie to the festival, said he wanted to promote a film adaptation of a Vietnamese literary masterpiece.

‘Kieu’ collected only VND2.7 billion ($117,480) but reportedly cost VND30 billion to make.

The movie has been criticized for its breakneck speed, unconvincing climax, low-quality movie effects, and prurience.

NBFF, one of the largest luxury lifestyle film festivals in the U.S., has been held annually in California since 1999. It has eight categories, including documentary, musical, family, and short film.

This year’s festival will be held between Oct. 21 and 28.

The film will also be available on Amazon's streaming service from Oct. 29.
