Joint efforts to bring sweet fruit abroad

Updated: 07:06, 03/05/2025

BAC GIANG- Going beyond the boundaries of domestic market, Phuc Hoa ripening lychee (in Tan Yen district, Bac Giang province) has penetrated many high-end markets such as Japan, US, EU and South Korea. Nguyen Thi Nhung (born in 1983), who used to be an agriculture extension officer, now a civil servant in justice and civil status, has made significant contributions to this success.

Visiting Phuc Hoa early ripening lychee orchard, we were impressed by Nguyen Thi Nhung.

She was born in this countryside, where she has lived with farm work since she was young with a dream to contribute to forming big good-quality fields in her homeland.

Nguyen Thi Nhung (on the right) instructs local farmers to care lychee following export standards.

Thus, she enrolled in the National University of Agriculture, Faculty of Agricultural Technical Pedagogy.

After graduating from university in 2005, Nhung did agricultural extension work in some units of Tan Yen district. She was transferred to Phuc Hoa commune in late 2016. She has wholeheartedly dedicated to the job and ceaselessly studied over the past 20 years.

Phuc Hoa is a key commune of early ripening lychee cultivation. From April to early June is the peak time for caring and harvesting lychee.

Nhung regularly comes to lychee gardens this time to check the plant situations and guide farmers in cultivation and technology application to have better quality products.

Besides, she helped to connect businesses to purchase local agricultural products. For big orders, she did not hesitate to overcome difficulties, even spending many nights in the gardens guiding local farmers to harvest and preserve lychee to meet customer requirements.

Phuc Hoa commune has signed contracts with many firms and partners to purchase lychee for export to the US, EU and some other high-end markets. The current standing of Phuc Hoa lychee has been gained thanks to joint efforts of all-level party committee and government in line with determination of each household and dedicated support of Nguyen Thi Nhung in caring techniques to meet export standards
Ngo Van Tiep, Chairman of the people’s committee of Phuc Hoa commune.

Seeing prospects for export of the sweet fruit, Nhung has actively instructed local farmers to apply cultivation techniques in accordance with regulations of import countries.

At first, only a few households followed her instruction. However, like “small rain lays great dust”, thanks to her perseverance along with the promotion and guidance from various authorities and sectors, local people have gradually realized benefits of producing high-quality lychee that meet strict standards of demanding markets.

As a result, Phuc Hoa early ripening lychee met the requirements for export in 2021. To date, the commune has established 27 lychee planting area codes for export to different countries including a number of high-end markets like US, Japan, EU, Thailand and South Korea.

Many households, once cultivating on a small scale, now have large quantities of goods exported to the US and several European countries.

“The current standing of Phuc Hoa lychee has been gained thanks to joint efforts of all-level party committee and government in line with determination of each household and dedicated support of Nguyen Thi Nhung in caring techniques for early ripening lychee to meet export standards”, said Ngo Van Tiep, Chairman of the people’s committee of Phuc Hoa commune.

For Phuc Hoa people, Nhung is a professional, dedicated and responsible officer. Most of the lychee growers believe in her and apply the techniques she instructed them.

The reputation and prospects of Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychee are far-reaching, affirming the quality of the local agricultural products in both domestic and international markets.

This year, the total area of early-ripening lychee in Phuc Hoa commune is estimated at over 700 hectares, with an expected output of around 10,000 tonnes, an increase of about 3,000 tonnes compared to last year.

Although Nhung moved to a different position in early 2025, she is still entrusted by the leaders of Phuc Hoa communal people's committee with the additional tasks of communicating and guiding local residents in lychee production to meet export standards.

Whenever farmers need support in caring techniques for lychee or other plant varieties, she is willing to instruct them.

“I am very happy to bring my knowledge and experience to support production and help people in the commune, contributing to enhancing values and trademark of the lychee in my homeland”, said Nhung.
