The Vietnamese leader had separate meetings with the WB’s Chief Executive Officer Kristalina Georgieva and Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde in Quebec, Canada right after attending the Group of Seven (G7) Outreach Summit.

PM Phuc called on the WB to facilitate Vietnam’s access to preferential loans while assisting the country in infrastructure development, climate change response and poverty reduction.

He reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to the effective use of the International Development Association (IDA) loans.

The PM also suggested the IMF coordinate in monitoring and assessing Vietnam’s macro-economy, continue to give consultations to the Vietnamese Government on managing the macro-economy, perfecting fiscal and monetary tools and restructuring the banking-financial sector, as well as provide more technical support for the country in the sustainable State budget management.

Both WB and IMF leaders expressed their delight at achievements Vietnam has recorded over the past time, lauding the country’s macroeconomic stability and rosy growth rate amidst uncertainties and risks of the global economy.

WB CEO Kristalina Georgieva pledged that the WB will continue its assistance to Vietnam, especially in improving the investment environment and developing clean and renewable energies.

Meanwhile, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde promised that she and the fund will strongly support and accompany Vietnam in the reform process.

On this occasion, PM Phuc invited the WB and IMF leaders to attend the World Economic Forum on ASEAN, which is scheduled to take place in Vietnam in September 2018.

The same day, PM Phuc met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during which the Vietnamese leader spoke highly of and showed his support for the UN leader’s contributions to promoting preventive diplomacy, preventing conflicts and addressing disputes by peaceful measures on the basis of respect for the UN Charter and international law.

Vietnam has actively participated in the UN’s common activities, he said, emphasizing the country’s support for the UN reform towards more efficiency, transparency and democratization.

The PM appealed to the UN Secretary-General to back Vietnam’s bid to run for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.

In reply, António Guterres said he hopes to see Vietnam become an active member of the council.

PM also invited the UN Secretary-General to attend the World Economic Forum on ASEAN and visit Vietnam. António Guterres accepted the invitation with pleasure.

At these bilateral meetings, PM Phuc and leaders of the international organizations compared notes on regional and international issues of shared concern.
