Research Professor Nguyen Ba Hung of RoK’s University of Ulsan confidently encounters challenges

Updated: 15:03, 23/12/2018
(BGO) – Meeting Nguyen Ba Hung (born in 1986) after many years from our high school graduation, I really surprised at his maturity. Defending the master thesis at the age of 24, receiving Doctorate Degree at the age of 29 and being appointed the title of Research Professor at the Laboratory of Smart Powertrain in the University of Ulsan (UoU) (Republic of Korea-RoK) one year later….are the outstanding achievements of the young man born in the northern province of Bac Giang.

Turning challenges into motivation

His father whose comes from Bac Ninh province felt in love with and got married to his mother, a country girl in Lien Son commune (Tan Yen district). Time went by, the couples moved to work at Bac Giang’s Ngo Gia Tu College where Hung was born. Here, he also had an entire childhood and studying procedure from primary to high schools. As the only child in the family with studious tradition, his parent always creates the best condition for Hung to pursue the study.

The big family of Nguyen Ba Hung.

After graduating from Ngo Si Lien Specialized high school (Bac Giang city) in 2004, Hung passed the entrance examination to Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). Under a dynamic and fierce studying environment, he spent most of the time on self-studying and researching after the lesson at the auditorium.

The chance to abroad come to Hung as a charm. After successfully defending his master thesis at HUST, there came an opportunity of doctorate scholarship in RoK. Thanks to the good English skill and many achievements in scientific research, Hung submitted his application form in late October 2010 that was soon accepted.

Study, study more and study forever” is the thought I have thoroughly grasped from my father who was a former lecturer of Literature, Philosophy, Party’s History and Science Socialism at Ngo Gia Tu College. Also, my father is a bright model for enthusiasm working for me since I was a little boy. Besides the official working hours, he participated in researching many scientific topics at the college level as well as created several written works

Research Professor Nguyen Ba Hung

Studying in an advanced environment with many modern equipment and facilities for scientific research, Hung is always excited at learning from others. In the first months, he often suffered from stress and sleepless because the field of dynamic and energy he follows is completely new and also a future development trend.

In the first year, Hung focused on researching, programming and calculating by himself to solve the initial issues. Though he failed for several times, the encouragement from lecturers and friends helped Hung clarify the majority of theoric questions.

For the next three years, the Kinh Bac’s boy linked the theory with the practice to thoroughly research the professional field. After sleepless nights researching at the lab and great continuous efforts, Hung had his first research topic published on the top international journal in energy, namely Applied Energy (with the impact factor of 7.9). Personally, this was a key milestone because previously there was no post-graduate at the lab earning a slot here.

After that, Hung was invited by the UoU to officially work at the lab as a Postdoctoral Researcher. To date, Hung has been the only member at the Lab who has 4 more new papers published on this journal and other global prestigious publications. Especially, nearly one year after conducting the postdoctoral research at UoU, Hung was bestowed with the title of Research Professor at the age of 30.

Hung shared: “I am deeply grateful to the encouragement of Doctor Lim, a Korean professor who directly guided me when I studied and defended the doctorate thesis as well as recommended me to stay to work in the university. Facing the difficulties and challenges in research makes me stronger and further inspires me to proceed to the future”.

The family is a firm support

Talking about Hung’s small family, his eyes brighten with happiness. His wife Dinh Thi Hinh (born in 1986) is also a Doctor at her young age of 30 with the technology profession of unleaded piezoelectric ceramic material. Several coincidences brought them together such as studying at the same university, sitting next to each other on a flight departing from homeland for postgraduate study and then work at UoU.

At the current position, Hung is in charge of researching specialized fields to develop the new generation of engine, enhance the efficiency of the automotive engine, minimize the arising harmful emissions, optimize fuel supply system for the compressed natural gas-fueled vehicles.

Besides, the Lab where Hung is working is responsible for researching and developing highly effective electric vehicles under the research projects of Korean Government, cooperation projects between UoU and big companies such as Hyundai, DIC and Motonic toward actual application.

Due to the special characteristic of scientific research, Hung often participates in global meetings for theoretical exchanges and pursuit of new knowledge from colleagues at World Congress of Society of Automotive Engineers held in Michigan State (USA), International Congress of Japanese Society of Automotive Engineers held in Yokohama city and Annual Conference of Korean Society of Automotive Engineers among others.

In spite of young age and career, the Bac Giang born professor had ever chaired a Technical Section of FISITA World Automotive Congress held in Busan city (RoK) in 2016, delivered a speech at one of the top international conference about applied energy in Cardiff city (England), reported at symposiums in University of Science and Technology in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city and Da Nang or the first International Conference on Material, Machines and Method for Sustainable Development in Da Nang city.

According to the young professor, the quick development of the Internet and social networks is a good method for everyone to improve knowledge. He recommended that besides the study and research time, the youngsters should participate in various events of sports, music or activities for the community so as to achieve comprehensive development and more meaningful life.
