Vietnam set for 9-day Tet break starting Jan 25

Updated: 07:35, 28/11/2024

Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has approved a nine-day holiday for the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year), from Jan. 25 to Feb. 2, 2025.

The Government Office announced Tuesday that the Prime Minister has agreed to the proposal from the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs regarding the holiday plan.

People buy peach blossoms for Lunar New Year celebrations at Hanoi's Quang Ba market.

The first day of the break coincides with the 26th day of the last lunar month, while the last day falls on the 5th day of the first lunar month of the new year. The break spans four weekend days and five workdays.

This holiday marks an earlier start compared to the past 10 years, when the Lunar New Year holiday began only one or two days before Lunar New Year’s Eve. With the early start, four days before the new year, people can better arrange their schedules to travel home, shop, easing traffic in the final days of the year.

Other public holidays in 2025 include New Year’s Day on Jan. 1, the Hung Kings Commemoration on April 5–7, the Reunification Day-Labor Day holiday from April 30 to May 4, and the National Day holiday from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.

The Prime Minister has instructed the labor ministry to inform public non-business units, political organizations, socio-political organizations, businesses, and workers about the upcoming holidays.

Organizations are required to arrange staff to be on duty according to regulations to ensure continuous service to organizations and the public. Officials and civil servants will also be assigned to handle unexpected issues.

The 2019 Labor Code states that based on actual conditions each year, the Prime Minister will determine the specific days off for Lunar New Year and National Day holidays. If official holidays fall on weekly days off, adjustments to working days or swaps will be made to extend the holiday period.
