Bac Giang’s 2021 lychee production: ensuring quality, managing code-granted growing areas

Updated: 20:38, 10/03/2021
(BGO) - Bac Giang province now has more than 27,000 hectares of lychee, mainly in Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Tan Yen, Son Dong and Yen The district. At this time, the flowering rate is high, signaling a bumper harvest.

This is a favorable condition for lychee production this year, but also creates pressure on sale. Therefore, in addition to focusing on domestic consumption, Bac Giang also needs to pay attention to promoting lychee exports.

For the Chinese market, the province has directed to maintain 149 code-granted growing areas approved by China on 15,867 hectares in such districts as Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Yen The and Tan Yen, plus 289 packaging facilities serving exports. For the US and EU markets, production must be maintained in 18 code-granted cultivation areas on 218 hectares. For the Japanese market, the province continues to direct the production in 19 planting areas that were granted codes in 2020.

At the same time, Bac Giang has reviewed and expanded the early-ripening lychee area by 11 hectares (Tan Yen district), the main-crop lychee area by 20-30 hectares (Luc Ngan district), increasing the total area of lychee for export to Japan to about 130 hectares this year. Currently, the Department of Plant Protection is evaluating and appraising to issue growing area codes in the coming time.

Ngo Van Tiep, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district), said that Phuc Hoa mainly grows early-ripening lychee, with the flowering rate of more than 90 percent. Some enterprises have visited local orchards and expressed their intention to purchase lychee. Therefore, the commune asked the provincial authorities to continue to support the product quality analysis, certification and training to expand VietGAP, GlobalGAP lychee areas.

At present, many enterprises have directly surveyed the lychee areas and forecast a bumper harvest this year. However, some enterprises raised concerns that during the harvest season, it is very difficult for them to hire workers. Mai Xuan Thin, Director of the Red Dragon Production and Trading Company Limited (Ho Chi Minh City), said that the lack of manpower for lychee harvesting will affect purchasing activities of enterprises. Because of the delay in some stages, export opportunities may be missed. Therefore, the local authorities should coordinate to provide human resources or organize professional and methodical harvesting to meet partners’ demand.

A representative of the Plant Protection Department also added that last year, the demand for imported lychee in some high-end markets was very large, but through examination, there were still batches of lychee with pesticide residues, so they were not eligible for export.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Ba Thanh affirmed, lychee has made an important contribution to the local economic growth. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the province has paid more attention to lychee production and consumption. Therefore, the sector is focusing on care measures to create quality products, thus increasing competitiveness and meeting the requirements of domestic and export markets.

With lessons learned from the previous lychee crops, this year the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has soon trained and guided people to follow the production process; and directed the Sub-department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to issue a record book, make a list of recommended pesticides for lychee cultivation, and devise a detailed spending plan to support areas growing lychee for export. In addition, the department has also strengthened the forecasting of pests and diseases, and guide farmers to strictly comply with regulations on the use of pesticides.
