Ceremony to announce decision recognising Tho Ha communal house’s door painting in fresco as national treasure
Tho Ha communal house is a beautiful, large-scale work with typical architectural art built in the Year of the Buffalo (1685) under King Le Hy Tong. This work is the cultural and spiritual space of the Vietnamese people with the typical architecture of the Le Trung Hung period.

In the communal house, there are artifacts of historical value in sculpture art, expressed through many diverse and unique themes, particularly the door painting in fresco created in the 13th year of Chinh Hoa (1692).
This is a valuable masterpiece most typical for the wood carving art in the 17th century with gilded wood and ceramics. It proves the talent and ingenuity of contemporary artisans and also bears the clearest imprints of the pottery-making technique of Tho Ha village.
The door painting in fresco, with its functions of separating the spiritual space and creating a solemn and sacred highlight in the central position in front of the back hall of the communal house. In terms of carving technique, it is a combination of many types of carving, forming many layers and many spaces right on a wood block.
The ancient folk artists blew their souls into each piece of decoration, creating a monumental but extremely delicate work of art. It is an original and unique artifact, one of the most aesthetically doors painting in fresco today.

Over 300 years of history, the decorative carvings are still intact, considered by the local government and people as a treasure that is always respectfully protected and preserved. With those unique and special values, on December 31, 2020, Tho Ha communal house’s door painting in fresco was recognized as a national treasure. This is the pride not only of Tho Ha villagers but also of the people of Bac Giang province toward the local cultural heritage.
