Co To Island enforces plastic ban for tourists

Updated: 07:47, 14/09/2023
Starting from Friday, tourists visiting the Co To Island of northeastern Quang Ninh Province will be subject to a new rule: no plastic bags or single-use plastic items allowed.

The decision, aimed at curbing plastic waste and marine pollution, was announced by the People's Committee of Co To Island District on Tuesday.

Co To Island boasts crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Administrative bodies, schools, markets, businesses, and fishing vessels within the island district will be prohibited from using plastic bags and disposable plastic items.

Authorities are setting up a checkpoint at Co To Port, where transport operators, passenger trains, tourism services, and accommodations will be required to educate visitors about the rules and replace plastic items with eco-friendly alternatives.

Nguyen Hai Linh, head of the Culture, Information, and Tourism Department of Co To District, said they had cut plastic use since August 2022. This helped the island's environment, bringing back rare animals like turtles and dolphins.

In the first nine months of 2023, Co To Island District experienced a surge in visitors, welcoming 298,000 tourists, a 152% increase compared to the same period last year.

Now is considered the prime season to explore Co To thanks to its seascape, pleasant climate, and more affordable tourism services.

According to the Co To District People's Committee, following the National Day holiday during September 1-4, prices for various island services, such as lodging, meals, and tours, have fallen by 30-50%.
