Lotus in full bloom in Uncle Ho’s hometown

Updated: 07:11, 19/05/2024

Every May, lotus ponds in Kim Lien Commune, Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province, are completely covered in flowers, spreading a pleasant and pure fragrance. 134 years ago, national hero Ho Chi Minh was born in this land (May 19, 1890 – 2024).

The lotus symbolises both simple and noble features like Uncle Ho’s personality.

The fragrant flowers are blossoming in many ponds stretching from Uncle Ho’s paternal hometown of Lang Sen (Lotus Village) to his maternal hometown of Hoang Tru Village.

The lotus flower represents elegance, purity, and the resilience of Vietnamese people. It also symbolises Eastern culture and Buddhism.

The countryside area of Nghe An is peaceful and quiet, adorned with surrounding lotus ponds.

In addition to the traditional lotus varieties that have long been present in Kim Lien, the local people also grow Dong Thap Muoi lotus, Hue lotus, thousand-petal lotus, Beijing red lotus, and others.

Lotuses planted at the President Ho Chi Minh Memorial Site in Kim Lien are also blooming.

The people here are growing about 20 varieties of lotus, serving many different purposes, such as for collecting flowers, leaves, seeds, and stems.

In recent years, the lotus growing area in Kim Lien Commune has expanded significantly. The lotus not only beautifies the village landscape but is also a source of stable income for the local people.

Local authorities also encourage people to convert ineffective rice growing areas and aquaculture ponds to lotus growing. Many products made from lotus plants have been certified by the People’s Committee of Nghe An Province as OCOP products, such as lotus tea and dried lotus seeds.
