Updated: 16:30, 06/11/2024

Unique masks used in the traditional lion dance of Tay and Nung ethnic groups were introduced to visitors at the Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Ethnic Groups in the Northeast region, which took place in Lang Son Province on November 3-4.

The eye-catching masks, among the traditional craft products of Lang Son Province on display at the event, drew much interest from both children and adults.

Artisan Hoang Choong poses with a mask at the booth showcasing traditional craft products of Lang Son Province.

Visitors to the event listened to the history and the crafting process of the masks, shared by 80-year-old Tay ethnic artisan Hoang Choong.

According to Choong, the masks are often made in the shapes of animals’ heads, such as cats, monkeys, and roosters. The handicraft product is used in the traditional lion dance of Tay and Nung ethnic groups in Lang Son Province.

The dance is often performed at traditional celebrations, hoping to bring the locals prosperity, happiness, and luck.

The lion dance of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in Lang Son Province was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2017.
