The Party newspaper held a ceremony to award the scholarships in Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province on the evening of September 18, presenting 1,000 scholarships to outstanding local students who have suffered from difficult circumstances.

Founded in 2012, the programme aims to provide timely support to thousands of children and disadvantaged students with excellent academic achievements across the nation, with the intention of ensuring local social security.

Speaking at the ceremony, Phan Huy Hien, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, who is also Chairman of the Vietnamese Seeds Fund, said that in the past years, the country and the region, in particular, has recorded significant results in education and training. However, teaching and learning in the northern mountainous provinces always face obstacles due to the mountainous terrain, difficult traffic, slow socio-economic development and frequent losses due to natural disasters.

Beyond all difficulties and challenges, local teachers and students still try their best to overcome the shortages and hardships to continue their work, Hien said, adding that teachers have come to each local family to encourage them to let their children go to classes.

The fund’s chairman stated that in implementing its continuous meaningful social activities, Nhan Dan decided to grant 1,000 scholarships for disadvantaged students in 10 mountainous provinces in the North, including Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai and Bac Kan.
