Doctoral villages in the past and at present in Bac Giang
Poor land feeds fondness for learning
Xuan Cam commune - a countryside famous for many people holding professor title and doctoral degrees. According to history books, more than 120 people in Xuan Cam hold professorship and doctoral, master, and bachelor degrees. The family of Ngo Van Nghi in Cam Xuyen village has eight children and grandchildren being doctors. This Lunar New Year, Nghi turns 92, but he is still perpicacious. He does not have a left hand as an inborn defect.
He was born into a poor family but he tried his best to overcome poverty to raise his children. From the example of the eldest son, Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher Ngo The Chi, Director of the Academy of Finance, the children and grandchildren all follow the tradition and make constant efforts. Typical among those are young doctors Ngo Thi Thu Huong (born in 1982), Ngo Van Hau (born in 1983), and Ngo Van Luong (born in 1991).

In Cam Xuyen village, the couple of Ngo Duy Tinh and La Thi Loi have engaged in farming all year round to raise four well-educated children. Currently, their son, daughter, and daughter-in-law get PhD degrees abroad.
Song Khe village used to belong to Yen Dung district, now it is Song Khe 1 and Song Khe 2 villages, Song Khe commune (Bac Giang city). It is famous for many successful people who were mandarins so it is also called "doctoral village”. According to historical records, the learning tradition began in the village when Quach Nhan won the third highest academic title in old education system in 1275. In the following years, Song Khe village had many people who passed exams and became mandarins, but perhaps the most famous was Dr. Dao Toan Ban and his son Dao Su Tich (the 14th century). Continuing the tradition of the forefathers, Song Khe commune now has more than 300 university graduates, nine doctors and nearly 40 people holding high ranks in the army.
Spreading the learning movement
High education, broad understanding, and mastery of life are the aspirations of students in the past as well as at present. Promoting the forefathers’ learning tradition, the whole province has 81.1 studying households; 2,800 families recognized as learning families; and nearly 2,000 communities recognized as learning units... There are typical families in districts and city such as Ngo Van (Lang Giang district); Ngo (Tan Yen district); La and Ngo (Hiep Hoa district); Pham and Tran (Yen Dung district); Ha Chi and Giap (Bac Giang city)...
Dao Xuan Can, former member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the provincial Study Promotion Association, said the study promotion movement in Bac Giang has developed deeply and strongly as it was built on the foundation of the traditions of families, lineages and communities. Many professors, doctors, university graduates and postgraduates are embellishing the cultural traditions of the homeland and inspiring the young generations to study. In the coming time, the study promotion associations at all levels will continue to praise, reward and honor outstanding families, collectives and individuals, contributing to spreading the study and talent promotion movement, and building a lifelong learning society.
