The Vietnamese Farmers’ Union (VFU) held an event on December 10 to honour outstanding agricultural scientists who have made significant contributions to agricultural production and rural development.

Among the 62 honoured agricultural scientists, the oldest is Le Thanh Liem (75) in the southern province of Tay Ninh while the youngest is Nguyen Van Huynh (29) in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai.

Huynh is known as an “amateur scientist”, who is currently director of the Huynh Phat agricultural service cooperative in his home province.

He has taken the idea of using residual heat from burning agricultural by-products to replace electric, solar and gas-powered water heaters and turned it into a commercial product now used by over 8,000 customers nationwide.

At the event, President of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front Do Van Chien presented the title of “Scientist of Farmers” to 62 outstanding individuals.
