HCMC tourism revenue during Reunification Day holiday doubles Lunar New Year's

Updated: 10:18, 05/05/2025

Ho Chi Minh City attracted nearly 2.7 million visitors during 15 days with Reunification Day celebrations from April 20 to May 4, generating VND15.7 trillion (US$603.7 million) of tourism revenue.

The earning is twice the tourism revenue from this year's nine-day Lunar New Year holiday from late January to early February, which amounted to VND7.69 trillion, and is equivalent to the revenue generated in March 2024, one of the top-performing months last year.

A series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's reunification contributed to the booming tourism industry in the city.

The number of visitors soared, with approximately 1.95 million arriving in Ho Chi Minh City during the five-day break from April 30 to May 4, marking a 101% increase from the same period last year.

International visitors reached 120,000, more than double the 54,000 recorded in the previous year. Total tourism revenue during these five days was estimated to exceed VND7.1 trillion.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, hotels in the city were fully booked.

From April 27 to May 1, one- to five-star hotels in the city center reached an occupancy rate of 95-100%, with many four and five-star hotels completely sold out.

Hotels in the surrounding areas also saw high occupancy rates, especially during the peak days of April 30 and May 1, with some locations reaching full capacity.

The department credits the success to the support of residents, visitors, and local businesses. Many restaurants have displayed national flags, setting up banners for the grand celebration, showing promotional images, and sharing messages of historical appreciation online during the holiday.

Several hotels even set up guestbooks for visitors to express their thoughts, with common messages like "Proud to be Vietnamese," "If there’s a next life, I’d still want to be Vietnamese," and "Peace is beautiful" being frequently written.

This year's grand celebration saw a significant increase in city and historical tours, with participation up two to three times compared to last year.

Travel agencies also reported a rise in visitors opting to travel later in the holiday, specifically on May 1 and 2 (the second and third day of the holiday), but the main trend was for people to stay in the city to watch the April 30 parade, which was joined by 13,000 people from different units including Chinese, Laos and Cambodian troops, and participate in local tours.
