New Zealand offers record 45 government scholarships to Vietnamese students

Updated: 11:12, 14/01/2025

New Zealand has announced 45 high school scholarships for Vietnamese students, providing 50% tuition support for the first year, marking the highest number of scholarships ever offered exclusively to Vietnam.

Ben Burrowes, Regional Director of the New Zealand Education Agency (ENZ) for Asia, said that 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Vietnam.

"Increasing the number of scholarships reinforces the strong commitment of New Zealand schools and creates more opportunities for Vietnamese students to pursue their study abroad dreams," he said.

The rise in scholarships means students have more choices, allowing them to select schools based on their preferred region, size, or academic reputation.

This year, new features include a dual application mechanism and flexible English language requirements. Students can apply for two scholarships: the government scholarship and individual scholarships from schools if not selected for the former.

To apply, students must create a 1.5-minute video introducing themselves, showcasing their academic performance (minimum GPA of 8.0), and providing English certifications (IELTS 5.0, PTE 36, TOEFL iBT 40, Duolingo 85, or Cambridge B1 Preliminary 154).

Applicants without English certificates can still apply, as schools may conduct interviews or require English proficiency tests based on their processes.

The online application window runs from Jan. 9 to March 16, with successful candidates starting their studies in the July 2025 intake.

The New Zealand Schools Scholarship program, established in 2019, has provided government scholarships to high school students. Last year, 18 Vietnamese students received these awards.

As of October 2024, over 1,700 Vietnamese students were studying in New Zealand, marking a 10% increase from 2022, according to the New Zealand Embassy in Hanoi.

New Zealand continues to grow as a destination for international students. A December 2023 survey by ENZ revealed strong public support for hosting international students, with more than 75% of respondents advocating for maintaining or increasing student numbers.

In 2023, New Zealand hosted 69,135 international students, a 67% increase from 2022, reaching 60% of pre-pandemic enrollment levels in 2019. The top five source countries were China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand.
