Contaminated fried chicken wings were the primary cause of food poisoning that killed one student and hospitalized over 600 others of Ischool in Nha Trang last week, according to test results announced Tuesday.

The Pasteur Institute Nha Trang said that salmonella, bacillus cereus and E.Coli bacteria were found in the fried chicken wings served at the school on Friday. Bacillus cereus was also found in the fish sauce, the institute said.

Bacillus cereus is a bacterium commonly found in food that is left overnight or stored in low temperature for a long time.

Nguyen Thi Huong Giang with the center of tropical disease at the Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi said that the students who have suffered food poisoning will have to undergo treatment for five to seven days with drugs and other interventions.

Of the 662 students admitted to different medical facilities after having their school lunch, a 6-year-old boy died on Sunday en route to a HCMC hospital.

As of Tuesday, 137 are still in hospital, down 74 from Monday. There is currently no severely ill case, according to the Khanh Hoa Province Health Department.

This was the most severe school food poisoning case in Vietnam to date, according to Cao Van Trung, deputy head of the poison monitoring and communications department under the Ministry of Health.

Khanh Hoa police have requested the local health department to provide details concerning the case for investigation. They have also asked that the patients' blood samples be preserved.
