Shuttler Nguyen Thuy Linh bids farewell to Olympics with impressive win

Updated: 11:21, 28/07/2021
Vietnamese shuttler Nguyen Thuy Linh fell short of a quarterfinal berth in the women’s singles event at Tokyo 2020 despite comfortably edging past Sabrina Jaquet 2-0 in her last Group P match on July 28.

Linh, three places behind Jaquet in the world rankings, needed only 33 minutes to finish off the clash at 21-8 and 21-17, thus successfully avenging her 1-2 defeat against the Swiss opponent two years ago (18-21, 24-22, 22-24)

Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh finishes second in the women's singles Group P at Tokyo 2020.

The win was an encouraging result for the 24-year-old Vietnamese although it was insufficient for her to book a last-eight slot. With two victories over France’s Qi Xuefei and Jaquet and one loss against Tai Tzu-Ying of Taiwan (China), Linh completed the group stage campaign in second place and had to bid farewell to her 2020 Olympic journey.

Earlier on the same day, Tai Tzu-Ying comfortably beat Qi Xuefei 2-0 (21-10, 21-3) to advance as the Group P winner.
