Successful model of pearl oyster farming in freshwater

Updated: 06:33, 25/06/2017
(BGO) - Although Truong Dinh Tung, born in 1992 in Dao Luoi village, Dong Hung commune, has not been trained in agricultural techniques,  he has succeeded in developing the model of freshwater pearl oyster growing and transplantation farm for export. He has become the first person to bring the new technique to BacGiang.

Truong Dinh Tung is practising the technique of cutting oysters’ cell at home.

After graduating from the Urban Work Construction College, Truong Dinh Tung returned to his hometown but managed to find a job. In 2015, he was recommended a pearl oyster raising and transplanting farm model in NinhBinh province and made a fact-finding tour to the site. Realising that this was a new and promising economic model, Tung decided to change his path of career.

Thanks to his dynamism, after one year of receiving the "secret", in June last year, Tung returned to his hometown to build a pearl oyster farm. With an area of 1,800 metres of water surface, he raised about 10,000 oysters. He purchased the oyster varieties inside and outside the district. Initially, he encountered some difficulties due to weather conditions so the survival rate was only 60 percent, 25 percent lower than expected. However, thanks to his efforts to learn from experience, the problems were gradually solved.

The new feature of this technique is that the oysters are cultured in freshwater, using the method of transplanting the nucleus into the seminal vesicles, instead of implanting it into the viscera like marine oysters. This method is very sophisticated from cleansing water environment to selecting appropriate temperature and food. Especially, the technique of transplanting oysters’ cells is the hardest part. Transplanted oysters must be kept in a clean water environment and monitored within 48 hours with special care.Too hot or too cold temperature may kill the oysters.

Normally, in order to produce beautiful pearls, it takes two years from transplantation to harvest. According to Tung, the water environment in BacGiang is very suitable for freshwater pearl oyster farming due to less acidity. In the coming time, after his farm operates smoothly and develops, Tung will invest in modern machineries to manipulate products, while focusing on the promising domestic market for higher profits.

Recently, a delegation from the provincial Department of Science and Technology, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development visited and surveyed Tung’s model. According to Duong Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, this model is a new economic model in the province as well as the country. Based on the initial results of this model, in the coming time, the Department will consider and coordinate with the relevant agencies to make comprehensive study and evaluation to serve as references for guiding the implementation of scientific researches and projects.
