Trinh Duy Hieu rewarded for winning gold medal at Asian Physics Olympiad

(BGO) – Trinh Duy Hieu, an 11th grader of the Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students, has been presented with an unscheduled reward for his gold medal achieved at the 19th Asian Physics Olympiad.

Empowered by the Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Duong Van Thai presented the reward to Hieu on May 14. The meeting also saw the presence of People’s Teacher title holder Nguyen Duc Hien – Director of the provincial Department of Education and Training, officials of the provincial Department of Home Affairs and the People’s Committee of Bac Giang city, teachers of the Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students, along with Hieu’s family.

Addressing the function, Thai congratulated Hieu on his excellent result and spoke highly of efforts by the provincial Department of Education and Training, teachers of Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students and Hieu’s family.

The official described the achievement as a demonstration of the province’s education quality, which is among the top 15 provinces and cities nationwide. Thai also expressed his hope that Hieu will continue upholding his family and hometown’s fondness for learning to obtain higher achievements at the International Physics Olympiad in Portugal.

He asked the provincial Department of Education and Training and the municipal People’s Committee of Bac Giang city to push on with training gifted students in order to nurture talents who will help with the development of Bac Giang province and Vietnam in the future.

On this occasion, he handed over a certificate of merit bestowed by the Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee and a cash reward of 32.5 million VND (over 1,400 USD) to Hieu. Chairman of the People’s Committee of Bac Giang city Mai Son also presented 22 million VND (over 960 USD) as the city’s reward to Hieu.

Trinh Duy Hieu thanked the People’s Committees of Bac Giang province and Bac Giang city, the Department of Education and Training, and teachers of the Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students for their care. He also promised to make efforts to gain a high result at the upcoming contest.

The 19th Asian Physics Olympiads took place in Hanoi from May 6 to 12, attracting 185 contestants from 25 countries and territories. The organizing board presented 33 gold, 13 silver and 24 bronze medals and nine special prizes to contestants with outstanding performances.

All the eight members of the Vietnamese team won medals at the Olympiad, and Hieu was one of the four gold medalists. With this gold medal, he was selected for the national team, comprising five students with the best results, to compete at the International Physics Olympiad in Portugal this July.
