Unusual March frost blankets northern Vietnam peak as cold spell intensifies
For the first time, frost has appeared in March on the peak of Ta Xua Mountain in northern Vietnam's Yen Bai Province, coating tree branches and grass in ice.
The frost began forming Tuesday night at the summit, which stands over 2,800 meters above sea level, and remained thick by morning as temperatures dropped to 0 degree Celsius.

Dao Viet Nghiem, chairman of Ban Cong Commune, where the mountain is located, noted that frost typically occurs in Ta Xua during winter, usually in December or January, and occasionally in February. This is the first time locals have witnessed frost this late in the season.
Northern Vietnam is currently under the influence of a reinforcing cold spell, with temperatures dropping to 5 degrees Celsius in Sa Pa, 6 degrees in Dong Van, nearly 10 degrees in Mu Cang Chai, and 16 degrees in Hanoi on Wednesday morning.
Typically, temperatures decrease by about 0.6 degrees Celsius for every 100-meter increase in altitude.
The last recorded frost on northern Vietnam's high mountain peaks occurred during a cold spell on Jan. 11.
