Ice, frost show up on Fansipan as temperatures drop below zero

Updated: 21:46, 24/12/2024

For the second time this winter, ice and frost has appeared on the peak of Fansipan as several northern Vietnam localities recorded temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

At around 3 a.m. Monday, a thin layer of ice covers the wooden floor on the peak of Fansipan. Temperatures were recorded to be at minus 1 degree Celsius. The ice lasted for around four hours, before melting away under the sun.

Thin layers of frost are seen on top of the Fansipan in northern Vietnam, Dec. 23, 2024.

Frost appears when air temperatures fall below 4 degrees, while temperatures on object surfaces fall below zero. Nighttime temperatures on the Fansipan, which peaks at 3,147 meters as the highest mountain in Indochina, can fall below zero.

On Monday morning, 16 out of 25 northern cities and provinces recorded temperatures below 10 degrees. The lowest one was 4 degrees, recorded in Cao Bang.

In Hanoi, temperatures range from 10 degrees in Ba Vi, to 23 degrees.

Northern Vietnam will be impacted by a weakening mass of cold air this week, with cloudy and foggy morning anticipated for Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Light drizzles are expected in the morning and at night from Thursday to Saturday.
