Vietnam enters mobile Internet speed global top 20 for first time
Vietnam’s mobile Internet speed reached 144 Mbps in February, taking it into the world’s top 20 for the first time and approaching fixed broadband speeds.
According to global Internet analytics firm Ookla, the country ranked 19th, ahead of India, Finland and France. Its fixed broadband speed of 164.77 Mbps ranked it 35th.

The UAE remained the leader in mobile Internet speed at 543.91 Mbps, while Singapore topped the fixed broadband rankings at 345.33 Mbps.
The commercial rollout of 5G by Viettel in October 2024 and VinaPhone in December has been credited with a rapid acceleration in Internet speeds after years of stagnation.
In September 2024 Vietnam’s mobile Internet speed was 54.17 Mbps, or 51st globally, but in less than six months it nearly tripled.
A report from iSpeed, a tool used by Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology, corroborated the findings. It recorded Vietnam’s 5G download speed at 187.58 Mbps in February.
Viettel led local providers with a median 5G download speed of 226.27 Mbps, followed by VNPT at 157.17 Mbps.
"Vietnam’s mobile Internet performance has improved significantly since the commercial deployment of 5G," Affandy Johan, an analyst at Ookla, said.
Ookla’s data showed that Vietnam’s 5G usage rate jumped from nearly 0% in September 2024 to 31.9% in February, indicating rapid network expansion.
To drive adoption, Vietnamese telecom providers have been expanding coverage and rolling out new data plans. On March 10 Viettel introduced daily 5G packages starting at VND10,000 (US$0.40).
The company reported having 5.5 million 5G subscribers and aims to expand coverage to 10 million this year. VinaPhone said it has three million 5G subscribers and MobiFone is expected to launch its commercial 5G services this month.
Vietnam has introduced policies to accelerate 5G expansion. Under a resolution issued by the National Assembly on Feb. 19, telecom firms must deploy at least 20,000 new 5G base stations by Dec. 31 to qualify for a 15% subsidy on equipment costs.
