Vietnam mobile Internet speed jumps 15 global ranking places to new high

Updated: 13:19, 05/03/2025

Vietnam’s mobile Internet speed reached 134 Mbps in January to rise 15 places globally to 22nd, its highest ever position.

According to global Internet analytics company Ookla, the speed surged 54% from 86.96 Mbps in December 2024.

VinaPhone’s 5G speed test recorded 1.9 Gbps on its launch day.

The country is now just 3 Mbps away from breaking into the top 20.

The United Arab Emirates tops the world in mobile Internet speed at 545.94 Mbps, while Singapore leads in fixed broadband at 336.45 Mbps.

The average global mobile Internet speed also saw a sharp rise, increasing 40%, from 62.79 Mbps to 91.24 Mbps.

Ookla did not explain the reasons for the sudden spike, merely saying the rankings reflect the use of modern chipsets in devices.

Several other countries also climbed several rungs: Malaysia was up nine places to 11th, Brazil surged 33 places to sixth and Nigeria was up 23 places.

Switzerland and Sweden fell 11 and 13 places.

The expansion of 5G networks is believed to be the key factor behind Vietnam’s rapid increase in speed.

Since the rollout of 5G in September 2024, speeds have consistently increased after years of stagnation. In October 2024, an Ookla representative told VnExpress that Vietnam’s 5G network averaged over 300 Mbps, nearly six times the country’s 4G speed.

Telecom providers have been expanding 5G coverage and increasing their user base. VNPT launched its 5G service in December 2024, with initial tests indicating speeds of 1.5-1.9 Gbps—over 20 times faster than 4G.

Vietnam’s domestic i-Speed measurement tool recorded a more modest increase, estimating the country’s average mobile Internet speed at around 70 Mbps. Representatives from Ookla and i-Speed have not commented on the discrepancy.

As of early February, Viettel reported 5.5 million 5G users, while VinaPhone had around 3 million. Both providers have deployed 5G stations in all 63 provinces and cities, with coverage mainly focused on densely populated urban areas.
