According to the judges, the chosen design for the 108-story Financial Tower within the North Hanoi Smart City project merges modern and traditional architecture, highlighted by a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

The building will become the tallest in Vietnam, incorporating materials and colors representing elements like water, gardens, the wind, and moon, intertwined with sky gardens within the tower, creating a vibrant living space in harmony with nature, the organizing committee design competition said Tuesday.

The design features a Lunarium in the observation lobby at the top of the building, where a sphere simulating the lunar cycle changes appearance throughout the day. This combination of water walls and reflective images from water bodies, along with the light from the moon sphere, offers a visually artistic experience.

Phan Dang Son, president of the Vietnam Association of Architects and chairman of the selection committee, said Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's innovative and unique proposal met the vision for a modern, integrated, and intelligent urban development.

The competition started in late February. Renowned global consulting firms participated, including Gensler (U.S.), Farrells (U.K.), and Pelli Clarke & Partners (U.S.).

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is the designer of the world's tallest building, the 163-story Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates.

Upon completion, the 108-story Financial Tower is expected to be one of the tallest in Southeast Asia. The tower managed by North Hanoi Smart City Investment Development JSC, a joint venture between BRG Group (Vietnam) and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan), with a total investment of US$4.2 billion, will be a focal point of the North Hanoi Smart City project in Dong Anh District.

The Smart City project spans 270 hectares.

According to the investor, it will be implemented over nine years in five phases. The first four phases, covering approximately seven years, will involve the development of green spaces, public buildings, housing, schools, transportation, parking lots, cultural and religious sites, and individual projects. The fifth phase will include several architectural landmarks, including the Financial Tower.
