Viet Yen township harnesses collective economy strengths

Updated: 13:35, 28/11/2024

BAC GIANG – Following the government's directions on further reforming, developing, and enhancing the effectiveness of the collective economy in the new period, with active engagement of local Party committees and authorities, cooperatives in Viet Yen township, Bac Giang province have seen positive growth in recent years, creating jobs and increasing incomes for workers.

Successful cooperative models

One standout example is the Ly Nhan Agricultural Services Cooperative in Minh Duc commune. With 5 hectares of land cultivated according to VietGAP standards, the cooperative grows a range of winter crops, including cabbage, carrot, and potato.

According to Director Nguyen Van Quyet, the 10-member cooperative manages 4,000 square meters of membrane houses for high-value crops such as melons and cucumbers. In addition, it leases nearly 15 hectares in Dai Son and Chua villages (both in Minh Duc) for seasonal vegetables.

Each year, the cooperative produces approximately 200 tonnes of various vegetables and 300 tonnes of potatoes, generating around 4 billion VND (157,853 USD) in revenue with a profit margin of over 10%.

Another successful cooperative is the Hanh Phuc Agricultural Cooperative in Tang Tien ward, specializing in products like roasted peanuts, chung (square glutinous rice) cake, pork pie, and ginseng brown rice tea.

The cooperative produces more than 30 tonnes of roasted peanuts, 4,000 chung cakes, and thousands of boxes of ginseng brown rice tea annually, with total revenue reaching 4.8 billion VND. It provides stable employment for five workers.

According to the township Economic Division, the township currently has 84 active cooperatives, with nearly 800 members. Of these, eight operate under the value chain, applying high technology to produce OCOP (One Commune One Product) certified goods rated 3- and 4-star.

Notable examples include the Hanh Phuc Agricultural Cooperative, the Khanh Hoa Medicinal Herbs Cooperative, and the DUCA High-tech Services Cooperative.

These cooperatives, particularly those using high-tech, value-chain models, have contributed to raising product value, optimizing land resources and workshops, and creating stable jobs for both members and local workers.

Reforming and enhancing cooperative operations

Although Viet Yen is already a key industrial and service hub in Bac Giang, local authorities have continued to prioritize the development of diverse economic sectors, including the collective economy, with cooperatives as a core.

The local government has committed resources to support cooperatives in line with the practical needs of the locality, ensuring compliance with legal regulations.

Efforts have been made to streamline administrative procedures related to investment, construction permits, land allocation and lease, scientific research, and human resources development. These have created a favourable environment for cooperatives to thrive.

As a result, since 2023, Vietnam has established 12 new cooperatives and two cooperative branches—exceeding the targets set by the township People’s Committee. In addition, over 120 kilometers of village roads have been upgraded or constructed.

Looking ahead, the local authorities plan to further support cooperatives by raising awareness of the role of the collective economy, particularly new-style cooperatives, strengthening existing cooperatives, expanding vocational training for cooperative members, and fostering an environment conducive to them.

Than Van Thuan, Vice Chairman of the township People's Committee, emphasized that, in addition to providing support, the local government would also focus on monitoring and inspecting the implementation of state management over the collective economy sector, and promptly handle any related legal violations.

In addition, the township aims to integrate the collective economy development with the broader new-style rural development programme and others on agricultural and industrial promotion, irrigation development, forestry, and aquaculture.

Timely solutions will be taken to remove obstacles, ensuring favorable conditions for the growth of cooperatives and replication of successful models.
