Vietnam acquires World Cup broadcasting rights

National broadcaster VTV announced Wednesday night that it has successfully purchased exclusive media rights in Vietnam for the 2022 World Cup.

All 54 games will be broadcasted live on its channels VTV2, VTV3, VTV5, VTV Can Tho, and the VTVGo mobile app.

Besides the broadcasting rights, VTV also got radio rights, mobile and Internet streaming rights (including over-the-top media service).

The price was undisclosed, but it is said that VTV has spent no less than $12 million, which is the amount that the national broadcaster paid Swiss marketing firm Infront Sports & Media for the 2018 World Cup rights.

Before Vietnam, many other countries in the world purchased the 2022 World Cup media rights with different price tags. India bought it for $54 million while it only cost Russia $13 million and $7.3 million for Malaysia.

The price for World Cup media rights has surged rapidly in the last three World Cup editions. In 2010, VTV paid $2.7 million for the rights and that number went up to $7 million in 2014.

The 2022 World Cup will take place from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar. This is the first time in history that the World Cup is hosted in winter, due to the extreme weather of Qatar during summer.
