Vietnam PM leaves for COP28, official visit to Turkey

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh left Hanoi on Tuesday to attend the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and pay an official visit to Turkey.

The PM is accompanied by Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Tran Van Son, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung, Deputy Minister of National Defense Pham Hoai Nam, Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Van Tuyen, Deputy Chief of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Office Bui Van Thach, and Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet, among other officials.

The trip is scheduled from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3.

COP28 will take place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12 in Dubai with more than 70,000 participants, including government leaders, heads of non-government organizations, businesses, youth delegates and other related parties.

Vietnam and Turkey established diplomatic relations in June 1978 and the UAE in August 1993. Both are leading Vietnam's business partners in the Middle East.

Vietnam's trade turnover with the UAE has reached $5 billion in recent years and with Turkey more than US$2 billion in 2022.

The UAE is investing in 38 projects with a total registered fund of $71.4 million while Turkey is investing in 36 projects pledged with $974.3 million. Turkish company IC Ictas led the Vietur joint venture to win a contract in August to build a passenger terminal worth VND35 trillion ($1.44 billion) at Long Thanh airport, slated to be Vietnam's largest.

PM Chinh will become the first Vietnamese PM to visit Turkey.

Around 200 Vietnamese are living in Turkey and 4,500 are working in the UAE.
