Vietnam strikes two golds at 61st International Mathematical Olympiad

All six members of the Vietnamese team participating in the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) won prizes, including two gold medals, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced on September 27.

The gold medallists are 10th grader Ngo Quy Dang and 11th grader Truong Tuan Nghia from the High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University (VNU).

The solitary silver medal went to Nguyen Mac Nam Trung, a 12th grader from the High School for the Gifted under the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM).

Chu Thi Thanh, a 12th grader from the Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted in Vinh Phuc Province, and Tran Nhat Minh, a 12th grader from the Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Nam Dinh Province, both grabbed bronze medals.

Dinh Vu Tung Lam, a 11th grader from the High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi University of Science, VNU, received a Certificate of Merit at the competition.

The 61st IMO was hosted by Russia in an online format, featuring the participation of 616 candidates from 105 countries and territories around the world. A total of 316 contestants were named as medallists overall (49 gold, 112 silver and 155 bronze medals), accounting for 51.29% of the total number of participants.

The Vietnamese team ranked 17th out of the 105 participating teams.

The exceptional result of the national IMO team has wrapped up a successful regional and international Olympiad season for Vietnam, with the all 24 students winning prizes, claiming nine golds, eight silvers, five bronzes and two certificates of merit.
