Vietnamese Party chief holds phone talks with US President

Party General Secretary To Lam held phone talks with President Donald Trump on Friday night, expressing Vietnam’s readiness to negotiate reducing import tariffs on U.S. goods to 0%, while proposing that the U.S. apply the same rate to products imported from Vietnam.

Joining General Secretary Lam at the Party Central Committee Headquarters for the call were Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Chairman of the Party Central Committee Office Le Hoai Trung, and Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc.

General Secretary Lam spoke highly of the talks, during which the two leaders affirmed their desires to continue strengthening the bilateral relations for the benefit of the two countries and contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world as well.

Both leaders held that the Vietnam-U.S. relations have been developing fruitfully in different fields. On bilateral trade ties, they deliberated measures to further promote trade.

The Party chief affirmed that Vietnam is ready to negotiate with the U.S. to reduce import tax to 0% for goods imported from the U.S., and at the same time, proposed the U.S. apply a similar tax rate to products imported from Vietnam.

He said Vietnam will continue to import more goods from the U.S. that Vietnam needs, and encourage and create favourable conditions for U.S. companies to expand investment in the Southeast Asian country.

The two leaders promised to discuss futher to soon sign a bilateral agreement to concretise the above commitments.

On this occasion, General Secretary Lam respectfully invited President Trump and his spouse to soo visit Vietnam again. The U.S. President accepted the invitation with pleasure and expressed his wish to soon meet the Vietnamese leader again.

President Trump asked General Secretary Lam to convey his greetings to leaders and the people of Vietnam.

On April 2, Trump unveiled plans to impose a 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports.

In 2024, Vietnam exported goods worth $119.5 billion to the U.S., while importing $15.1 billion, according to Vietnam Customs.
