Vietnamese players dominate 2024 ASEAN Cup best squad
The 2024 ASEAN Cup organizing committee has announced the tournament's best XI based on fans' votes, with 7 Vietnamese players, two Thai players and one player each from Singapore and the Philippines making the list.
The announcement came after a voting process conducted on the ASEAN United FC website between Jan. 6 and 16.
This marks the first time in tournament history that a single team, champions Vietnam, contributed seven players to the best XI since the voting for best XI started in 2016.

On the attacking line, Vietnam's Nguyen Xuan Son was included to no surprise, as he was both the tournament's top scorer and best player, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.
However, the inclusion of Nguyen Tien Linh over Thailand's Suphanat Mueanta can spark debate. Mueanta contributed nine goal involvements (four goals and five assists), outperforming Tien Linh's four goals and two assists.
In midfield, Nguyen Quang Hai and Nguyen Hai Long were selected, while Nguyen Hoang Duc, who played the most minutes for Vietnam, was left out.
Despite not scoring, Duc was hailed by Thai media as Vietnam's best midfielder. Quang Hai and Hai Long each scored two goals, which is likely the reason why they got selected.
Singapore naturalized player Kyogo Nakamura and Sandro Reyes of the Philippines are the two other names in the midfield.
On the defensive side, Vietnam and Thailand each had two players. Thailand's Pansa Hemviboon, who scored an own goal in the second leg of the final, made the list alongside Vietnam's Bui Tien Dung and Bui Hoang Viet Anh.
Viet Anh’s inclusion was questionable, as he played only one match during the tournament, in the group stage against the Philippines. The other defender who got selected was Nicholas Mickelson.
Nguyen Dinh Trieu was selected as the goalkeeper, a predictable outcome given his recognition as the tournament's best goalie. The 33-year-old had two clean sheets and conceded only 0.8 goals per match, the best statistics in the tournament.
The best XI was chosen through reader votes, though the organizers did not disclose the percentage of votes each player received.
The 2024 ASEAN Cup, held from Dec. 8 to Jan. 5, featured 10 teams competing in 26 matches, with 91 goals scored and nearly 390,000 fans attending the games.
