Da Nang, Hoi An in Asia's top 5 affordable destinations for American digital nomads

Updated: 17:33, 16/01/2025

The U.S. travel guide Travel Off Path has named Da Nang and Hoi An as two of the top five affordable destinations for digital nomads in Asia for 2025.

Digital nomads are individuals who work remotely while traveling, rather than being tied to a fixed location. According to MBO Partners, 11% of U.S. workers now identify as digital nomads, with the American digital nomad population rising from around 7.3 million in 2019 to an estimated 18.1 million in 2024.

The Dragon Bridge, a symbol of Da Nang, is lit up at night.

Travel Off Path highlights that digital nomads often seek local cultural experiences and warm weather year-round, avoiding the crowds of southern Europe, the safety concerns of Latin America, or the high costs of the Caribbean. Asia stands out as a perfect choice due to its affordability.

Da Nang appeals to travelers with its blend of culture, history, and nature. Travel Off Path notes that the city offers affordable living costs, with average monthly rent at just US$355, a bowl of pho costing $1.60, and a three-course meal at a fine-dining restaurant priced around $24.

The travel guide recommends visiting the 150-meter-long Golden Bridge, nature trails, and ancient temples.

For a spiritual retreat, digital nomads can visit the Linh Ung Pagoda, known for its atmosphere, Vietnamese architecture, and the largest Buddha statue in Da Nang.

Da Nang has other attractions such as My Khe Beach, Son Tra Peninsula, and adventure activities like paragliding and jet skiing.

Da Nang's neighbor Hoi An also ranks among Asia's most attractive destinations for digital nomads due to its cost of living, beauty, and cultural richness.

Its historic center features Japanese pagodas, Chinese temples, and French-era buildings.

With a cost of living estimated at $909 per month, including street food for $1.50 and monthly rent starting at $249, Hoi An provides a budget-friendly alternative to Vietnam's bustling cities.

Other locations on the list are Chiang Mai in Thailand, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and Makassar in Indonesia.
