Updated: 12:01, 11/09/2021
Over 700 volunteers, including students, workers and office staff, have participated in transporting goods and buying food and essential goods for people in Ho Chi Minh City.

On all streets and alleys, the volunteers’ journeys have made significant contributions to social security during these days of fierce fighting against Covid-19 in the southern localities, especially Ho Chi Minh City.

The volunteers from the Ho Chi Minh City Welfare Centre begin a day of delivering essential goods to people.

Nguyen Cam Tu, manager of a company in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, said that during the period of temporary suspension of operations due to the social distancing, she and her colleagues contacted the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Fatherland Front to voluntarily join the groups delivering relief gifts to the people.

In Ward 9, Go Vap District, a team of voluntary shippers, made up of six members, have gone around the streets and alleys of the ward bringing essential goods to the people. Before the outbreak of Covid-19, Ngo Nguyen Minh An was a freelance cameraman and photographer. When the city needed voluntary shippers, he did not hesitate to join immediately.

Teams of volunteers transporting goods to the people have also been established and operated continuously in District 7 to serve the people during the social distancing period. According to the Chairman of the District 7 Labour Federation Vo Khac Binh, after surveying the people's needs for food, agencies and units have established shippers to increase human resources for the anti-epidemic forces. Most of them are students, office staff and freelance workers whose work had been temporarily suspended due to the epidemic.

Considered as a "rice jar of love" in the City, volunteers from the Ho Chi Minh City Welfare Centre have promptly delivered many support packages to disadvantaged households in the area. Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee To Thi Bich Chau, also Director of the City Welfare Centre, said that since mid-August, through various channels, volunteers have delivered over 12,500 relief gifts to people.

As a freelance worker who lost her job due to the impact of the epidemic, Tran Thi Han from Dinh hamlet in Tan Phu Trung Commune, Cu Chi District, registered her need for support to the local authorities, but did not receive any reply. After receiving her information, the switchboard staff reported Han’s problem to the SOS team’s standing board. As a result, she received a bag of necessities.

Amid the difficult days of the epidemic, a relief package is not only “one piece of food while hungry” but also a spiritual gift and encouragement for the people. The reception of information from needy people has been improved by the application of information and technological advances.

Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee To Thi Bich Chau affirmed that the participation of voluntary shippers have significantly contributed to the success of social security during the fierce fight against Covid-19 pandemic. This force has always given timely support, contributing to helping the city promote epidemic prevention and control effectively with the eventual aim of beating the pandemic.
