“Going to the field” festival of ethnic minorities in Son Dong district

BAC GIANG - The “Going to the field” festival took place in Na O village, An Lac commune, Son Dong district, Bac Giang province on December 2 attracting a large number of ethnic minority people in the district.

The festival was hosted by An Lac commune in collaboration with the communes of Van Son, Huu San, Le Vien and Vinh An under direction of the district People’s Committee.

Son Dong district is home to more than 80,000 residents and 30 ethnic minority groups with the majority of the Tay, Nung, Dao, Cao Lan and San Chi with numerous special cultural features. The ethnic minority groups have preserved many unique cultural activities including the “Going to the field” festival.

The going to the field rite takes place under witness of the mass of ethnic minority groups.

The “Going to the field” festival is an opportunity for cultural exchanges and fostering solidarity among ethnic minorities. Besides, it creates a joyful and healthy cultural atmosphere contributing to preserving the fine tradition, building and developing the progressive Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity.

“Going to the field” festival or “Long tong festival” or “cau mua” (praying for fertile crops) ritual is a folk cultural activity of the ethnic minorities with deep humanitarian meanings to build the community ties and express the people’s aspiration for yin-yang and the space-earth harmony.

Each offering by local people like chicken, glutinous rice, banh day (round glutinous rice cake), fruits and candy expresses gratitude to the god, ancestors and saints who bless the people with bumper crops and peaceful, thriving and happy life.

The blind man’s bluff game is cheered by numerous people.

The worshipping part is followed by festive procession rite and folk games like pot smashing game, shuttlecock throwing game, silting and blind man’s bluff.
