Bustling “workers’ villages”

Updated: 06:57, 28/10/2018
(BGO)-The ancient villages in Bac Giang province, which were established hundreds of years ago, have dramatically changed with the new names as “industrial villages” or “workers’ villages”. The village roads are as crowded as any urban streets with busy people and vehicles during day and night especially in rush hours in the morning at dawn.

I came to My Dien 1 hamlet, Hoang Ninh commune, Viet Yen district in a late afternoon of October. The some- kilometer road to the hamlet is crowded with shops and stores selling from casual stuff like clothes, food and vegetable to jewelry, motorcycles, spa, financial services, real estate business, construction materials and motorcycle taxi.

Most of them are well-ordered and eye-catching. Besides, there are some new-opened or under- construction stores. The village road looks like a busy street. My Dien market has been opened with the capacity of some thousand people.

The services here serve demands of both local people and ten thousands of workers. Hoang Ninh commune has nearly 7,000 lodgings serving needs for temporary residence of 11,000 workers, equal to the population of the whole commune. A number of households built 3 or 4- storey houses for rent. Particularly, My Dien hamlet is home to 5,000 people renting houses, 2.5 times higher than its population.

There are about 4,000 workers renting houses and 400 households building houses for rent with some 2,000 lodgings at Quang Chau commune. People at the hamlets Nui Hieu, Tam Tang, Quang Bieu and Nam Ngan also built many high buildings for rent. The lodgings have indoor toilets.

Many households provide air-conditioners or allow the tenants to equip air-conditioners in their lodgings. Most of the households open grocery stores to serve local people and workers. The number of small bungalows is decreasing despite the cheap price 400,000 VND (17-21 USD) per month.

Currently, despite the increasing demands of the workers for lodgings, there are no available houses for rent at the commune. According to an official of the commune, many companies provide daily shuttle buses serving their workers to reduce the burden of the workers’ accommodations.

Some couples working for the companies could buy their own houses in the commune. Thanks to proper propaganda and guidance, the local people and workers living at the locality strictly obey the regulations on social order and security, environmental hygiene and declaration of temporary residence.

The industrial development boosts positive change of labor structure while the different types of services contribute to improving incomes and living standards of local people. 75 enterprises and organizations and more than 3,100 households in the communes having industrial zones and clusters benefit from the services of food trading, restaurants, entertainment, houses for rent and motels.

The services around the industrial zones gained revenues of about 1,800 billion VND (77 million USD) in 2017 with income per capita of 10.5 million VND (450 USD) per month, 3.5 times higher than the average income of the district.

Apart from the big benefits, the mechanical population of 72,000 working and residing in the district has brought a number of arising issues that need resolving. Particularly, in order to meet the demands for the school of local children and children of the workers in the industrial zones reducing the overloaded classes, the district has mobilized funding resources to upgrade 77 schools and build 2 more kindergartens while providing support to establish 55 private kindergartens with 97 independent baby houses in the 2011-2018 period.

The lodging area for workers at Nui Hieu hamlet, Quang Chau commune.

A number of new residential and urban areas have been planned such as the 2,800-lot residential and service area, Nui Hieu, Nam Ngan and Quang Bieu residential areas, 295B provincial road at Quang Chau commune and Dinh Tram- Sen Ho urban area at Hoang Ninh commune.

Although the incomes and living standards of local people have been increased, the district needs to continue directing the communes strengthening the management and guidance to facilitate local people in developing their industries and services to improve incomes and living standards.

Besides, it is necessary to ensure social order and security and environmental hygiene while investing in infrastructure and taking measures to enhance accommodation quality for workers. In addition, it is essential to foster cultural facilities to improve the spiritual life of local people.
