Ensuring children’s safety on journey to school

Updated: 18:20, 07/10/2023
The ‘Safe school zones guide’ has gradually been completed after two years of research and pilot application. The guide has been sent by the Ministry of Transport to localities, as a reference for projects and solutions to ensure road traffic safety, through school zones nationwide.

The Ministry of Transport in coordination with the AIP Foundation organised a workshop to introduce the ‘Safe school zones guide’ handbook in Hanoi on October 6.

Deputy Director of the Transport Department (Ministry of Transport) Nguyen Cong Bang said, “Currently, in Vietnam, more than 17 million children are commuting between home and school an average of 2 - 4 times per day. Many children have to walk to school on roads without sidewalks and some roads with mixed lanes. It is alarming that traffic speeds around schools frequently exceed internationally recommended speed limits for school zones.”

In fact, road traffic accidents are the second leading cause of death and serious injury in children and adolescents aged 0-19 (second after drowning accidents). Road traffic accidents also cause 50% of deaths among adolescents aged 15-19.

The Ministry of Transport, the University of Transport and the AIP Foundation have coordinated in developing appropriate content in the ‘Safe school zones guide’, in a bid to ensure safety for children on their journey to school.

The development of the guild aims to educate safe traffic skills, gradually forming a traffic culture for students. In addition, the document is a reference and guidance for local management agencies to implement solutions to improve traffic safety conditions in school areas.
