The Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative was established in 2014 with 29 members. Now it has 44 members, with 5,500 bee colonies, accounting for 40 percent of the total number of bee colonies in the district. Currently, all bee colonies in Tuan Dao commune are raised organically, with quality and delicious honey which is sold at good prices, and very popular among consumers.
After 7 years, the number of members of the cooperative as well as the number of bee colonies have been constantly increasing. In order to have healthy bee colonies which produce quality and safe honey products, all bee colonies are carefully selected by households, with the number of domestic bees accounting for 80 percent and foreign bees 20 percent.
In November 2021, the wild honey product of the Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative was recognised as a 3-star OCOP product by the district’s OCOP assessment council. |
In 2020, the amount of honey collected reached 120 tonnes, fetching 6.5 billion VND. Its members has an average income of 3-5 million VND per month, even some earn 10 million VND per month.
To support households in poverty reduction and economic development, the cooperative has provided nearly 1,000 bee colonies for households in the district under the national target programme’s project. The project to build a model to support ethnic minority households raising indigenous bees for economic development and sustainable poverty reduction is invested by the Division of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Son Dong district and the provincial Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs.
Son Dong wild honey achieves 3-star OCOP standard
Thanks to scientific production, in 2015, the cooperative was granted the collective brand "Son Dong Wild Honey" by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam under the Ministry of Science and Technology. In addition, it was given code, barcode and certificate of food hygiene and safety. The cooperative has coordinated with the district authorities to organize beekeeping training for nearly 1,000 local households.
Thanks to organic honey beekeeping, members of the cooperative have an average income of 3-5 million VND per month, even some earn 10 million VND per month. |
And in November 2021, the Son Dong wild honey product of the cooperative was recognised as a 3-star OCOP product by the district’s OCOP assessment council.
In addition to the achieved results, the cooperative's activities are still limited, yet commensurate with the potential, partly because of inpractical policies and mechanisms, weak management and slow access to science and technology. On the other hand, there is a lack of capital to invest in facilities.
Nguyen Duc Minh, Director of the Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative, said "The cooperative helps workers and small producers voluntarily gather together to effectively solve problems in production and business, and improve their competitiveness, contributing to economic restructuring. It also gives them opportunities to share information and knowledge, apply scientific and technological advances, improve knowledge and market information, thus obtaining better prices".
