Farmers in mountainous district earn over 6 billion VND per year from wild honey

(BGO) – The Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative (Son Dong district, Bac Giang province) was established in 2014 with only 29 members, but now its members have increased to 44. In 2020, the amount of honey collected reached 120 tonnes, fetching 6.5 billion VND (286,150 USD). Its members has an average income of 3-5 million VND per month, even some earn 10 million VND per month.

Cooperative earns 6.5 billion VND in 2020

Nguyen Duc Minh, Director of the cooperative, shared that "The drops of sweet, fragrant honey are a gift of nature to the people of Son Dong district".

The Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative was established in 2014 with 29 members. Now it has 44 members, with 5,500 bee colonies, accounting for 40 percent of the total number of bee colonies in the district. Currently, all bee colonies in Tuan Dao commune are raised organically, with quality and delicious honey which is sold at good prices, and very popular among consumers.

After 7 years, the number of members of the cooperative as well as the number of bee colonies have been constantly increasing. In order to have healthy bee colonies which produce quality and safe honey products, all bee colonies are carefully selected by households, with the number of domestic bees accounting for 80 percent and foreign bees 20 percent.

In November 2021, the wild honey product of the Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative was recognised as a 3-star OCOP product by the district’s OCOP assessment council.

In 2020, the amount of honey collected reached 120 tonnes, fetching 6.5 billion VND. Its members has an average income of 3-5 million VND per month, even some earn 10 million VND per month.

To support households in poverty reduction and economic development, the cooperative has provided nearly 1,000 bee colonies for households in the district under the national target programme’s project. The project to build a model to support ethnic minority households raising indigenous bees for economic development and sustainable poverty reduction is invested by the Division of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Son Dong district and the provincial Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs.

Son Dong wild honey achieves 3-star OCOP standard

Thanks to scientific production, in 2015, the cooperative was granted the collective brand "Son Dong Wild Honey" by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam under the Ministry of Science and Technology. In addition, it was given code, barcode and certificate of food hygiene and safety. The cooperative has coordinated with the district authorities to organize beekeeping training for nearly 1,000 local households.

And in November 2021, the Son Dong wild honey product of the cooperative was recognised as a 3-star OCOP product by the district’s OCOP assessment council.

In addition to the achieved results, the cooperative's activities are still limited, yet commensurate with the potential, partly because of inpractical policies and mechanisms, weak management and slow access to science and technology. On the other hand, there is a lack of capital to invest in facilities.

Nguyen Duc Minh, Director of the Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative, said "The cooperative helps workers and small producers voluntarily gather together to effectively solve problems in production and business, and improve their competitiveness, contributing to economic restructuring. It also gives them opportunities to share information and knowledge, apply scientific and technological advances, improve knowledge and market information, thus obtaining better prices".

Yen The diversifies OCOP products
(BGO) – Implementing One Commune One Product (OCOP) programme, so far Yen The district (Bac Giang province) has had 15 agricultural products with protected brand and approval decision for valid application by National Office of Intellectual Property Vietnam (Ministry of Science and Technology) as well as 15 OCOP products at provincial level. The following ones are some typical products.  
22 new OCOP products certified
(BGO)- Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee of Bac Giang province has approved the results of the evaluation, classification and certification of 22 products participating the first One Commune One Product (OCOP) Programme of Bac Giang province in 2021.
E-commerce platforms support farmers to consume OCOP products
(BGO) – Now the lychee season ends, some e-commerce platforms such as Sendo.vn, Voso.vn, Postmart.vn... continue supporting the farmers in Bac Giang province to sell various farm prodce. Most of the products are One Commune One Product (OCOP) like Chu rice noodle, Yen Dung fragrant rice, dried lychee, Son Dong wild honey...
Summer OCOP Fair to open in Ha Long city on April 28
The One Commune One Product (OCOP) fair - Summer 2021 is planned to be launched on April 28 at the Quang Ninh Exhibition of Planning and Expo Center in Ha Long city, according to the provincial OCOP Steering Board.
Bac Giang: Nearly 50 percent of OCOP products are supplied to supermarket
(BGO) – According to the Division of Rural Development (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) in Bac Giang province, now the province has 95 OCOP products,  50 percents of which are sold at several supermarkets of Big C, Co.op Mart, Fivimart, Vinmart, Vinmart+, Aone, Hapro...and many convenient stores, safe food stores in the provinces and cities across the country.
